A boiler stove heats water for radiators and your hot water cylinder as well as warming the room. We list wood-only boiler stoves from Woodfire and Opus, from 8kW freestanding models to the 21.8kW Woodfire EX22 inset, which sends 18.5kW to water. All carry an Ecodesign rating.
How a boiler stove works
A water jacket around the firebox captures heat and sends it to your heating system. The rated output is split: part goes to water and part into the room. Choose by the water output you need for your radiators and cylinder, then check the room output will not overheat the room the stove sits in.
| Stove | Total | To water | To room | Flue |

| Woodfire CX8 | 8kW | 5.4kW | 2.6kW | 150mm |
| Woodfire CXC8 | 8kW | 5.3kW | 2.7kW | 150mm |
| Opus Calypso | 8.3kW | about 4.9kW | 3.4kW | 150mm |

| Woodfire EX10 inset | 9.9kW | 8.5kW | 1.4kW | 200mm |
| Woodfire EX12 Panorama inset | 11.9kW | 7.5kW | 4.4kW | 200mm |
| Woodfire EX15 inset | 14.9kW | 12.5kW | 2.4kW | 200mm |
| Woodfire EX17 Panorama inset | 16.8kW | about 10kW | 6.8kW | 200mm |
| Woodfire EX22 inset | 21.8kW | 18.5kW | 3.3kW | 200mm |
Planning the heating system
A boiler stove is a heating project, not just a stove purchase. You will need:
- A heating engineer to design the system: open vented or sealed, a heat leak radiator, a thermal store or link-up with an existing boiler.
- Pump and safety controls. We sell the LK 810 ThermoMat 2.0 G load unit and the LK flue thermostat in stove accessories.
- A HETAS-registered installer for the stove and chimney, or Building Control sign-off, with a carbon monoxide alarm in the room.
Sizing the water output
Add up the outputs of the radiators the stove will serve, allow for heating the hot water cylinder, and match that to the water figure, not the total. A stove whose room output is too high for the room it sits in will overheat it, so the room output matters too: about 1kW per 14 cubic metres is the usual starting point. Older or draughty rooms need more, and a heat-loss check by your installer gives the right answer.
Freestanding or inset
The CX8, CXC8, Passiv and Calypso stand in the room on a hearth. The Woodfire EX models are inset stoves built into a fireplace opening, and the EX12 Panorama comes in a double sided version for a fireplace between two rooms. The Panorama models take logs up to 600mm long.
All are wood only, so plan a good supply of seasoned logs under 20% moisture. None of the versions listed is exempt for smoke control areas. Compare with our standard log burners if you only need to heat the room.
Questions
Can a boiler stove heat my whole house?
A boiler stove can run radiators and hot water if the water output matches your system. A heating engineer should size it from your radiator outputs and cylinder; many households link it to an existing boiler.
Do I need a plumber as well as a stove installer?
Yes. The stove and chimney are fitted by a HETAS-registered installer or signed off by Building Control, and the water side needs a heating engineer.
Can I burn coal in these boiler stoves?
No. The Woodfire and Opus boiler stoves listed burn wood only.
What flue size do they need?
The Woodfire EX inset models need a 200mm flue. The CX8, CXC8, Passiv and Opus Calypso use 150mm.
Is a boiler stove allowed in a smoke control area?
Only an exempt model burning approved fuel. None of the boiler stoves we currently list is exempt.

Complete Modular Outdoor Kitchens: The Ultimate Alfresco Experience
Transform your garden into a professional-grade entertaining space with our complete modular outdoor kitchens. Moving beyond the traditional barbecue, a modular setup allows you to customise your cooking environment with integrated appliances, prep surfaces, and storage solutions. Whether you are a weekend griller or a dedicated outdoor chef, these kitchens provide a seamless "hub" for dining and socialising.
At Glowing Flames, our modular range focuses on "Durability meets Design." Crafted from weather-resistant materials and featuring premium built-in components, our kitchens are designed to remain a stunning feature of your outdoor living space all year round.
Why Choose a Modular Outdoor Kitchen?
- Bespoke Flexibility: Unlike one-size-fits-all units, modular systems allow you to choose the exact components you need. From 5-burner grills to integrated fridges and sinks, you can scale your kitchen to fit your patio size and cooking style.
- Seamless Aesthetics: Designed with a "built-in" look, our modular cabinets—such as the premium Cabinex range—feature sleek, contemporary finishes that mimic the clean lines of modern interior design.
- All-Weather Resilience: Our kitchens are constructed from high-quality, corrosion-resistant materials. Whether it is powder-coated steel or durable stone-effect cabinetry, every element is chosen for its ability to shrug off the British climate.
- Enhanced Socialising: By bringing everything you need—prep space, refrigeration, and cooking power—into one place, you can spend more time with your guests and less time running back and forth to the indoor kitchen.
Core Components of the Glowing Flames Range

Versatile Cooking Additions
Beyond the grill, consider integrating a Built-In Pizza Oven or a wood-burning BBQ to add variety to your outdoor menu, from artisan pizzas to slow-roasted meats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a concrete base for a modular kitchen?
Yes. Due to the weight of the cabinetry and integrated grills, a modular kitchen should be installed on a solid, level surface such as a concrete pad, high-quality paving, or reinforced decking.
Can I customise the layout of the modules?
Absolutely. The "modular" nature of these systems means you can arrange the sink, grill, and storage units in a way that best suits your workflow and the shape of your patio.
What utilities are required for an outdoor kitchen?
A basic setup may only require a gas bottle. However, for a fully functional kitchen, you may need to consider professional installation for a mains water supply (for the sink), a waste drain, and weather-protected electrical sockets for fridges and lighting.
How do I protect my modular kitchen in winter?
While the materials are weather-resistant, we always recommend using tailored covers during the winter months. This protects the grill components and keeps your worktops clean and ready for the first spring barbecue.
