Buying guide
Fire pit accessories fall into three groups: the ones that protect the pit, the ones that make it more comfortable to use, and the ones that turn it into an outdoor kitchen. Here is what each does and which fire pits they fit.
Lids
A lid is the most useful accessory you can buy. It keeps rain, leaves and snow out of the bowl, keeps children and pets away from hot ash, snuffs the fire at the end of the evening and turns the pit into a table.
- The flat table top lid is 2mm steel in six sizes for round Firepits UK pits from 50cm to 120cm. Order the size of your pit; it is about 10cm wider, so it overhangs by roughly 5cm. Put it on the pit and leave it to starve the fire; expect some smoke from underneath the first time.
- The Box D table top lid is an 82cm square 2mm steel lid for the Box D.
- Firepits UK does not make a lid for the Legs Eleven.
BBQ racks and hot plates
| Accessory | Fits | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Half moon mesh rack | 50cm to 90cm bowls | 5mm round steel mesh over half the bowl |
| Half moon rack, all bar | 60cm to 90cm bowls | 5mm round steel bars over half the bowl |
| Half moon rack, plate and bar | 50cm to 90cm bowls | Solid plate half and bar half |
| Quarter moon hot plate | 60, 70 and 80cm half moon racks | 1mm steel plate that sits on a half moon rack |
| Tripod cooking rack | 60cm to 90cm bowls (Small and Large), or over an open fire (Long Leg) | Hand-forged tripod with an adjustable hanging rack; Small, Large and Long Leg |
| Kebab rack | Sits on a grill | Square-edged 42cm skewers that hold their position |
Half moon racks leave the other half of the bowl open, so you can keep adding logs while you cook.
Hanging and slow cooking
- The hanging arm with hook fits the swing arm lug on Firepits UK pits, for hanging joints or pots over the fire.
- The hanging cooking pot holds 3.5 litres, in 2mm steel with a lid and adjustable chain, for stews and chilli.
- The hanging roaster is 35cm across with six hoops and an 80cm chain, in 4mm British steel, for roasting a whole chicken or joint.
- The roasting oven is a lidded 42cm steel oven that sits on a BBQ rack and works as a smoker box or, with a stone, a pizza oven.
Pans and tools
- Long-handled pans in 2mm mild steel: 26cm and 34cm frying pans and a 23cm saucepan.
- A burger press and cloche: an 8mm steel press for smash burgers and a 2mm steel cloche for melting cheese.
- A fire pit paddle, 60cm long with a 20 x 21cm blade and a hardwood handle.
- A six-prong marshmallow fork, 75cm long, for marshmallows and small sausages.
Comfort and practical extras
- Fire pit BBQ gloves in heavy-duty black leather (36cm long) or lighter brown suede.
- A wind shield, 25cm high, that sits on the rim of 60cm, 70cm or 80cm round pits.
- A fire pit shelf that hangs on the rim of 60cm to 120cm round pits, for plates and drinks.
- A coated canvas log carrier bag for bringing logs from the store.
Caring for accessories
Season racks, plates and pans before first use: heat, wash, dry and wipe with a little cooking oil (Firepits UK advises against olive oil). After cooking, let them cool, clean them and store them dry. Bare steel weathers to a patina, which is normal. Always handle racks and pans with gloves: they stay hot long after the fire dies down.
Common questions
Which lid fits my fire pit?
For round Firepits UK pits, order the flat table top lid in the same size as your pit, from 50cm to 120cm. The Box D has its own square lid, and there is no lid for the Legs Eleven.
Can I put a fire out with the lid?
Yes. Put the flat table top lid on and leave it; it starves the fire of air and stops embers blowing about.
What is a half moon BBQ rack?
A rack that covers half the bowl, leaving the other half open to add logs. Firepits UK makes mesh, all bar and plate and bar versions for 50cm to 90cm pits.
Will these fit a fire pit from another maker?
They are made for Firepits UK pits. Lids and racks are sized by bowl diameter, so check your pit's size and rim before ordering.
What can I cook in the hanging pot?
Stews, chilli, soups and anything that suits slow cooking over a fire. It holds 3.5 litres.
How do I season a fire pit rack?
Heat it, wash it, dry it and wipe it with a little cooking oil. Firepits UK advises against olive oil.
Does the wind shield fit every fire pit?
It sits on the rim of Firepits UK round fire pits of 60cm, 70cm or 80cm.
Can I hang a pot over my fire pit?
Yes, on Firepits UK pits with a swing arm lug, using the hanging arm with hook and the 3.5 litre hanging cooking pot.
What gloves should I use?
Heavy-duty heat-resistant gloves. Firepits UK makes a 36cm black leather pair and a lighter suede pair.
