Buying guide

Igneus makes wood-fired ovens that are light enough to move and quick to heat, without giving up a proper firebrick floor. The Classico is the oven we stock, along with the stand, cover and tools made for it.

About Igneus

Igneus says its pizza oven range is hand made in Portugal. In the UK, Igneus Wood Fired Ovens trades as a division of Quality Shops Online Ltd. The Classico is built from powder coated aluminium and stainless steel around a floor of removable 28mm firebricks, and Igneus describes it as the most popular oven in its range.

Stand, cover and tools

  • Classico stand: marine grade stainless steel with two rear wheels, a front bar for tools and a perforated lower shelf for wood.
  • Classico cover: all-weather canvas with a reinforced chimney section, shock cord toggle and adjustable strap.
  • 5 piece accessory bundle: a 12 inch peel 85cm long, a turning peel, a brush with scraper, a 35cm rocker cutter and a dough cutter.
  • Cast iron pan set: a casserole dish, a lid that doubles as a frying pan and a ridged skillet, about 7kg.
  • Heat-proof gloves: gauntlets for handling hot pans, trays and the oven door. Igneus does not publish a temperature rating, so do not hold hot metal for long.

Using the Classico

Build a small fire of dry, small-split hardwood in the middle of the floor, let the floor and dome heat through, then push the fire to one side and cook beside it, turning pizzas with the turning peel. As the oven cools, use the cast iron pans for roasting and slow cooking. Brush the floor before each cook, never use water or oven cleaner on the firebricks, and fit the cover once cold. You can use an outdoor pizza oven in a smoke control area, according to government guidance.

Where to put it

Stand the Classico on a stable, level table, worktop or its own stand, outdoors, with clear space around it and open sky above the 600mm chimney. Keep it away from fences, sheds and overhanging branches, and keep children and pets back while it is hot: the outside of a wood-fired oven gets very hot. Because it weighs 20kg with the firebricks out, it is easy to move into place and to store under cover in winter.
