Opus stoves are for people who want the fire to be the centrepiece of a modern room: tall, sculptural bodies, generous glass and, on many models, a log store built in underneath.

The Opus range compared

All the Opus stoves we list carry an Ecodesign rating, and the wood stoves burn wood only.

What the letters mean

Opus model names end in letters that describe the door and base. D versions have a solid bottom door, GD a glass door, LS an open log store underneath and GLS a glass front with an open log store. The PR Harmony sits on a pedestal that rotates, so you can turn the fire to face the sofa or the dining table. Each listing names the exact version.

Choosing an Opus stove

• A typical living room: a 5kW Melody, Trio LS or Aria D. At 5kW or less, most older homes need no extra air vent.
• A larger or open plan room: the 7kW Harmony, which takes logs up to 330mm.
• The most glass: the Trio LS, with windows on the front and both sides.
• Radiators and hot water too: the Calypso boiler stove.
• No logs: the Trio Scala, a natural gas stove with a ceramic log effect and remote control.

Flue, air and smoke control

The Opus wood stoves have 150mm flue outlets, so plan a 150mm liner or flue. Opus cylindrical stoves such as the Melody can take the Opus external air kit, a 100mm stainless steel duct in 1.5m or 3m lengths, which is useful in airtight homes. The Melody and Trio LS listings include SE versions, which are approved for burning wood in smoke control areas; the standard versions, and the Harmony, Aria D and Calypso we list, are not exempt, so choose the SE option if you live in a smoke control area. Installation is by a HETAS registered installer, with a carbon monoxide alarm in the room; the Trio Scala gas stove must be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Heat and sizing

Using the rule of about 1kW for every 14 cubic metres of room, a 5kW Opus suits a room of around 70 cubic metres and the 7kW Harmony around 100. Older, draughty or high-ceilinged rooms need more, and a heat loss check by your installer gives the right answer. The 5kW models normally need no dedicated air vent in a home built before about 2008; the 7kW Harmony normally does.

Planning for a tall stove

Opus stoves are taller than most log burners: the Melody is 1105mm and the Trio LS 1154mm. Check the height of your fireplace opening, or stand the stove out in the room on a hearth. For a rear flue connection, the listings give the height to the centre of the rear outlet (955mm on the Melody, 926mm on the Harmony LS), which tells you where the pipe will meet the chimney. Many Opus models can stand on a 12mm hearth; the manual confirms the hearth and clearances.
