Buying guide

Every Woodfire stove we list is a wood burning stove with a boiler built in. If you want a log fire that also contributes to your central heating, this is the range to look at.

About Woodfire stoves

Every Woodfire stove we list is a wood-only boiler stove carrying an Ecodesign rating. The range splits into freestanding stoves, which stand on a hearth like a conventional log burner, and the EX inset stoves, which are built into a wall or chimney breast. The EX stoves take an external air supply and are rated for an operating pressure of 2.5 bar. The listings give the split between heat to water and heat to the room, the efficiency, the flue size and the maximum log length.

Choosing a Woodfire stove

Start with the heat your radiators and hot water need, which a heating engineer works out, and match it to the heat to water. Then check the heat to the room suits the room. The EX10, EX15 and EX22 send most of their output to water, which suits a living room that would overheat with a big room heater. The Panorama models put more heat and a wider fire into the room. The CX8 and CXC8 suit an existing fireplace or stove alcove, with a 150mm flue; Woodfire says the CX models are not suitable for a shared chimney.

Freestanding or inset?

The CX8 and CXC8 stand on a hearth like an ordinary log burner, so they suit an existing fireplace, a stove alcove or a room where you want the stove on show. The EX range is built into a wall or chimney breast with only the door and frame visible, which suits new builds, extensions and full fireplace renovations. The EX10, EX15 and EX22 share a body 1107mm high, 634mm wide and 545mm deep; the Panorama models are wider, with a landscape door. See inset stoves.

Fuel and running

Every Woodfire stove we list burns wood only. Use logs under 20% moisture: a water jacket keeps the firebox walls cooler than in a room heater, so wet wood quickly tars the boiler and flue. Light with plenty of air and let the stove and water come up to temperature before settling the fire. Sweep the chimney quarterly while in regular use and have the stove serviced every year.

Planning and installation

A boiler stove is designed with your heating system. Plan a heat leak or thermal store, pump control and protection for the boiler with your heating engineer; the LK 810 load unit and LK flue thermostat are in our accessories. The EX inset stoves need an opening built to the manual's dimensions, with 400mm to combustibles at the rear and sides and 1000mm in front, and a 200mm flue. A HETAS registered installer fits the stove and flue, with a carbon monoxide alarm in the room. The Woodfire stoves we list are not listed as exempt for smoke control areas.
