Buying guide
A stove or fireplace is only as good as the parts around it. The right flue pipe, hearth and alarm make it safe and compliant; the right spares keep it burning cleanly for years. Here is what each accessory is for.
Installation checklist
- Stove pipe and fittings to connect the stove to the chimney liner or flue, in the stove's outlet diameter. See stove flue pipe.
- A hearth to suit the stove: 12mm glass or stone where the maker allows, otherwise a constructional hearth. See hearths.
- A carbon monoxide alarm in the room, required for a new or replacement solid fuel or gas appliance in England, with similar rules in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
- An air supply, either a room vent where the regulations require one or an external air kit where the stove takes one.
- A register plate where the pipe enters a chimney, and access for sweeping. Your installer will specify this.
Carbon monoxide alarm
Approved Document J asks for a carbon monoxide alarm to BS EN 50291-1 in the room with a new or replacement solid fuel or gas appliance, powered by a battery designed to last the life of the alarm (or a hard wired mains alarm). The SleepSafe COA10 is certified to BS EN 50291-1 and -2, with a sealed 10 year battery, an 85dB siren and end of life warning.
Where to put it: on the ceiling at least 300mm from any wall, or on a wall as high as possible (above doors and windows) but not within 150mm of the ceiling, and between 1m and 3m horizontally from the appliance. Test it regularly.
Running and monitoring
A magnetic stove thermometer sits on the stove pipe and shows the flue pipe temperature, which tells you whether the fire is running too cool (smoky, tarry) or too hot (overfiring). It is a simple way to learn your stove. For airtight homes, the Opus external air kit is a 100mm stainless steel duct, in 1.5m or 3m lengths, that feeds outside air straight to an Opus cylindrical stove, and the Woolly Mammoth direct air adaptors convert those stoves to an external supply (ducting not included). Woolly Mammoth also offers bolt-on 150mm and 300mm leg extensions that lift the stove and leave space for logs underneath.
Carron spares and conversion kits
Seals, glass, firebricks, baffles and grates are the parts of a stove designed to wear. Carron spare parts we list include:
- Carron ECO 5kW spares: bottom firebrick, side firebricks and grate for the 2022 model.

Getting parts that fit
Accessories are rarely universal. Before you order, find the model name and, where possible, the version or year on the stove's data plate or manual. Stove pipe must match the outlet diameter; spares must match the model (Carron's ECO 5kW spares, for example, are for the 2022 model); Woolly Mammoth legs and air adaptors are made for each MK2 model and the widescreen version; and the Ekofires remote suits selected fires only. Fireplace finishing touches
For period fireplaces, Carron's blue flower on bone tiles are glazed clay in sets of 10, and its cast iron flower panels are an alternative to tiles. Replacement ash pans with handle are made for specific Carron fireplaces. The three piece black granite back panel, 970mm x 970mm, suits solid fuel or gas fires within a surround.
Boiler stove controls
A boiler stove needs controls on the water side. The LK 810 ThermoMat 2.0G is a load unit for wood boiler stoves and log boilers up to 65kW, with 28mm compression connections, and the LK flue thermostat switches a pump or load unit by flue temperature, with a probe rated to 300°C. Gas fire accessories
The Ekofires remote control upgrade is a mains-free ultrasonic remote for selected Ekofires inset gas fires, which adjusts the flame height once the pilot has been lit by hand. Check your model is listed as compatible, and have any gas work done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Common questions
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a stove?
Yes, in England, for any new or replacement solid fuel or gas appliance: one to BS EN 50291-1 in the same room. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules, and an alarm is a sensible precaution everywhere.
Where should I fit a carbon monoxide alarm?

It manages the flow between a boiler stove and the heating system and keeps the returning water warm enough. The LK 810 suits wood boiler stoves up to 65kW.
