Installation and safety
A qualified electrician must install the element, horizontally, in a radiator filled with water and inhibitor. When the radiator is not connected to the central heating, fill it to about 95% to leave room for expansion and fit a safety release valve; when it is connected, keep at least one radiator valve open while the element is on.
Questions
Which radiators can it go in?
Carron says its elements suit cast iron and steel column radiators, and lists all its cast iron radiators as compatible. Each radiator page gives the minimum number of sections for each element.
Do I need the safety release valve?
Only when the radiator is used as a standalone electric heater, not connected to the central heating. Carron says a safety release valve (ELE013) must then be fitted, which you can add as an option here.
Which thread does it need?
The 1200W element needs a 1/2 inch BSP connection. The 1500W and 2000W elements need a 3/4 inch BSP connection.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
It is rated IPX4, which Carron describes as splash resistant and suitable for bathroom use. Its instructions say a bathroom radiator fitted with an element must be at least 60cm from a bath, shower or basin and never above a bath, and must be hard-wired by a qualified electrician.
Is there a guarantee?
Carron gives the elements a 2 year guarantee.
