The Carron Knightsbridge is the largest surround in the Carron cast iron range: 1630mm across the square mantel, 1330mm high and 110kg. It frames a 900 x 900mm opening and is made in black or full polish.

At 1630mm wide at the shelf and 1380mm at the floor, measure your chimney breast and existing opening before you order. The surround frames whatever sits in the opening, whether a cast iron fireplace insert, a gas fire or an inset stove.

Installation and safety

A fire surround is not a heating appliance on its own, but whatever goes inside it must be installed to Building Regulations: a solid fuel fire or stove by a HETAS-registered installer or with Building Control sign-off, and a gas fire by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A carbon monoxide alarm is required in the room for a new solid fuel appliance and, in England, for a new gas fire too. The surround needs a non-combustible hearth, and at 110kg it needs at least two people to position it.

Questions

What size is the fire opening?

The opening is 900 x 900mm. Overall the surround is 1330mm high, 1630mm wide at the shelf and 250mm deep.

Which fireplace insert will fit?

Carron's 40 inch cast iron inserts, such as the Royal and London Plate, have a 102 x 102cm back plate, which is larger than this opening, so the surround frames the face of the insert. Ask your installer to confirm the fit and fixing before ordering.

Does it come with a hearth?

No. The hearth is sold separately. Carron makes polished and honed black granite hearths from 92cm to 152cm wide; your installer will confirm the size your fire needs.
