The FDC Eco is a multi-fuel stove made by Charlton & Jenrick for FDC (UK) Ltd, with a 125mm top or rear flue spigot, SIA Ecodesign Ready and exempt for use in smoke control areas when burning wood logs with the air control plate fitted. It comes in four models: the compact FDC4 (4kW) and FDC5 (5kW), the wide FDC5W (5kW) and the FDC8 (8kW) for larger rooms.

Why choose the FDC Eco

  • 4kW to 8kW nominal output depending on model; see the sizes table for each approximate range.
  • 79.5% to 82.9% efficient on wood or smokeless fuel depending on model (EEI class A+).
  • Exempt for use in smoke control areas in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland when burning wood logs (air control plate fitted); SIA Ecodesign Ready.
  • 125mm flue spigot, top or rear; the FDC4 and FDC5 take logs up to about 300mm, the FDC5W and FDC8 up to about 375mm.
  • Needs only a 12mm superimposed hearth (225mm in front, 150mm each side).

About this product

Will it suit your space?

As a rule of thumb, an average room needs roughly 1kW for every 14 cubic metres, so 4kW suits about 56 cubic metres, 5kW about 70 cubic metres and 8kW about 112 cubic metres (around 23, 29 and 47 square metres with a 2.4m ceiling). Older, draughty or high-ceilinged rooms need more, and a heat-loss check by your installer gives the right answer.

The FDC4 is only 210mm deep, so it suits shallow fireplaces. Check the sizes table below for the height, width, depth, weight and distance to combustibles of each model.

Installation and safety

It must be installed by a HETAS-registered installer or signed off by Building Control, and a carbon monoxide alarm is required in the room. FDC allows a 5 inch (125mm) liner when burning only smokeless fuel or seasoned wood with the air limiter fitted, but recommends 6 inch (150mm); minimum chimney height is 4.5m.

Questions

Can I use it in a smoke control area?

Yes. Every FDC Eco model is exempt for use in smoke control areas in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland when burning wood logs, provided the air control plate supplied with it is fitted.

Does it need an air vent?

It depends on the model. For the 4kW and 5kW models, FDC's instructions say that under Approved Document J no purpose-provided vent is normally needed in England and Wales for appliances of 5kW or less, except in recently built homes. The 8kW FDC8 normally does: Approved Document J requires 550 square millimetres of permanent ventilation per kW above 5kW, which is 16.5 square centimetres. Your installer will confirm.
